Some news from Atlanta (since I don't have any of my own)--Dad's giving a talk at Emory University this month and Mom recorded a medieval music CD this week. Go, 'rents!
Ingrid
Tonight it is our turn to bring treats to choir practice, and since we're not going to have any during the weeks of Lent, we were advised to make it good. I stopped at my favorite Bosa Donuts on University Avenue this morning and picked up a douple dozen. Mardi Gras!

Then,
That's all
Thank you.
Thom. (I was called Thom for a short time after a lab group of mine turned in a paper with that spelling in my freshmen year biology class)
Well, Pete, as far as the 20 page thing, I haven't written any. What I'm going to do is write one 40 pager and one 20 pager instead of three 20 pagers. Same thing basically.
Looks like your having fun in France, Theresa.

Hey all. I was just about to ask if you knew about the teachers from Roosevelt coming to Como. I only met a Spanish teacher who was amazed at my Spanish teachers ability to teach free levels of Spanish at once, and get a bunch of them to pass the AP exam.

How long are you going to be "over there", Teresa? I enjoyed reading about all you're doing. I pray you have a safe trip home. I also send my greetings to everyone in Atlanta, Chicago, St. Paul, Shakopee, New York City, Bloomington, Annecy (?) and Minneapolis. Too busy to call your own mother?... tch tch tch... Have a great weekend, everybody! Nancy
A couple of days ago several educators from Roosevelt High School( alma mater of several of us Andersons) visited Como Park H.S.(alma mater of Liv) . Apparently CP was in a position ten years ago similar to what Teddy country faces today; a critical mass of unsuccessful students and a bad reputation. My colleagues were impressed with the CP of today. Maybe some of their successes can be replicated at RHS.
Well, Maria, I'm sorry to say I won't be home for spring break. I'm actually going to go to a monastery to pray and spend some time in silence during the week. It's actually a Lutheran monastery with benadictine influence. Check it out at http://StAugistinesHouse.org
We got permission from the U.S. government to travel to Cuba this summer for a week and so now we are awaiting a letter of invitation from Cuba so we can start the process of getting visas.
Hope all is well in Minnesota, Georgia, New York and Indiana (Ingrid are you still in Indiana?) oh, and of course, France.

Yesterday I did write something on here, but I must have done it wrong because it didnt get published. Anyways, what I wrote was that I have a couple questions for several people who frequent this site. First off...Norris, are you working at the exhibit on Egypt this weekend, because I think Pete and I may be going on Saturday and we would like to see you, plus possibly get a discount on our tickets. Tom, when is your spring break? Just wondering because my parents want to have a game night with your parents and mine and we want to wait to have it until you are home.
Just curious, but what happened to the idea of going on an Anderson Family trip this summer? Has the entire idea been thrown out the window? I think it would be a blast. I know that going to Matt and Janelles wedding in California was a great family bonding time...especially for me being the newcomer.
Nancy we did get your phone message from a few days ago and I have been bugging Pete to call you back, but he claims that he's too busy. I hope school is going well for you and thanks for the call. It's nice to know that people are thinking of you.
Hope everyone is having a great week and enjoy your trip Teresa!!

Well, not really....

BUT there are Andersons in France! At least one we know of... Liv got a call this afternoon from the VISA company checking to make sure it was really RIGHT that someone was using our credit card in France. Interesting that they do catch things like this - Liv's guess is that the fact that charges were coming from the US and France simultaneously was suspicious. I guess it is good they are on top of this...
Teresa wrote today that, "We just finished the first day at the conference center... now just have to wait for the big dinner. The place is very fancy and in a beautiful location. It is interesting to have perspectives from around the world."
(feel free to write her there - she DOES have email!)

I took a long walk around part of the lake today and everyone was biking, rollerblading, skateboarding, and walking dogs. I have seen a million dogs, including many "French" poodles.
Finding the cybercafe took me a long time though. The girl at the hotel said it was nearby in some cafe but I never found it. I had just about given up when I ran across this little place tucked in a tony street with antique shops and art galleries. It only has about 12 terminals, but it very classy (including quiet music in the background). Not like the English one with 400 terminals! You just pay a person after you're done (1.50 Euro for half an hour). I don't think I will ever find it again, however!

As far as the conference, we have found out more about the other participants and it turns out that there will probably have some contentious moments (that is the SHORT story!) So I now have to worry about: terrorists, American-hating French people, drunk taxi driver (my mother's contribution), dying in Lake Annecy (which some CDC person did in winter when he jumped in to show off to some Scandinavian beauties... I didn't think I would be tempted, but Joel pointed out that my hotel bragged, "Only 200 metres to the pier!"), jet lag, AND having to do my share of arguing at the conference. Assuming I'm alive, I'll write next from Annecy!

I'm doing an independant study on Ancient History of the Near East, which is a wonderful topic. I had established with the Professor that I would write 3 papers during the semester to show what I am learning etc... the problem was that I forgot to establish the length of those papers. On friday I got an e-mail from him saying that "Each paper must be no less than 20 pages". So, every four weeks until I graduate, I need to write a 20 page paper. Ahhh, I hope I graduate.
Tom.
We also enjoyed Janelle's choir concert, although it must have taken a lot out of her as she was too sick to work today...
My latest adventure - I was lost in the basement of some building where all the doors were red. I really felt like I shouldn't be there. After I inspected the "new" Coffman Union, I decided to go outside instead of wandering forever neath the streets of the U, and I ended up in a place that said, "Authorized vehicles only - mortuary pick-up." I proceeded on, after all I'm not a vehicle. But alas, there was no sidewalk around the building. I decided not to try going thro' ... after all, what picture do the words "mortuary pickup" bring to your mind? Class is going well. We really enjoyed Janelle's concert. - Nancy
You are correct. When you write something, please be sure to hit "post & publish". If you just hit post, it won't go onto the live site. :)
What's up?...I posted a couple days ago, but I guess it didn't go through...Thanks to Ingrid for putting up the pix of our house, or as we call it now, "My blue heaven"...Lynda and I had a nice weekend in a state park cabin about 40 miles outside Atlanta -- we rode our bikes to Madison, the town that time (and General Sherman) forgot -- Mark and Tom may remember it from BRAG 96. Congratulations to Liv...when are you going to put you knowledge of the probability of horseracing to some practical use?...l8r...

What a beautiful house! I love the blue siding.
And what beautiful sunsets... especially the "foggy glow" one.. really dramatic looking.
Mark was going to tell about the home and garden show, but he didn't, so, even tho' it's something from a week ago, I just wanted to say how neat David's Landscape display was. Peter had a lovely picture of it, if you remember. I can see why it was chosen to be the set for all the tv stations. We're looking forward to the concert, Janelle!

The house looks great, John and Lynda. Now if you just didn't have that broken lamp...
We spent the morning at the regional science fair awards ceremony, always a lengthy affair. Between Norris and Liv, this was our fifth time. We are pleased to announce that Liv is not only going to the state competition again this year, but is again the St. Paul district's alternate to the International Science and Engineering Fair in May! The two girls from St. Paul who were chosen to be the delegates are friends of Liv's and also were the delegates last year and they placed very high in the world (so they're not going to be edged out too easily). Liv also won one of the few monetary awards, $200 from Intel, which is the third year she's won this particular prize. Her project (predicting horse races) didn't exactly qualify for most of the "special awards," as they were for "improving human health," "advancing the field of aviation," etc. Liv said she might have won if the "Daily Racing Form" had sponsored a prize. A question on the judging form was "Was the project original or unique?" and one of Liv's judge's wrote, "Very!" Anyway, now she'll have to work hard in school to be able to take time off to go to Duluth (state) and Cleveland (ISEF), right, Liv?
Sorry about all the bragging!

You might know Eagle Scout Ben Curtis . He's that "Dude, you're getting a
Dell" guy on the TV commercials. On Sept. 11, 2001, the 21-year-old from
Chattanooga, Tenn., found himself in the midst of a crisis.
He was sleeping in his Lower Manhattan apartment when an airliner hit the
first World Trade Center tower. His roommate, a photographer, ran to the
disaster scene a few blocks away, but Ben went back to sleep, thinking the
noise was a gas explosion. When the second tower was struck, he got up and
looked out the window. Seeing the fire, he decided his roommate might need
help.
When the first tower collapsed, Ben rushed into the subway entrance nearby
to escape the flying debris. Clouds of soot poured down into the
tunnel. He took his shirt off and tied it around his face to breathe.
A woman came down the stairs with a severe gash on her head. "At first I
was completely freaked out," he said, "but then my Scout training came
back to me." He used his shirt as a pressure bandage and helped the woman
to safety.
I'm not sure what to think about the Dell Dude getting busted. I always thought marijuana was a Gateway drug.

A Long Wait for Winter
By KATHERINE LANPHER
ST. PAUL
Our first real snowfall of the season was a beaut — big, fat, lazy flakes that piled up through the day, nearly six inches in the cities, twice that up north. The only problem: It was just last week.
Usually, a February snowfall is part of the normal tedium of winter here. You've become used to snow by then, its grace and its burden. You love its unbesmirched whiteness covering the laziness of autumn, when you meant to rake the leaves, really. You endure the snow that has been driven on and trod upon, gray and slushy and joyless.
So that first snow found us all a bit loopy with the prize of it, the way prairie settlers must have greeted a long-sought-for rain in August. Children played in their yards in snow suits so new they practically squeaked, and strolling down any street you could catch the fine points of a discussion on how to build a snow fort. Men driving trucks with snow plows revved their engines and vroomed down city streets just to show they could; lesser mortals in sedans fishtailed at intersections.
It's all part of the endearing waltz of winter here, but this year we've been a beat or two off. In January, a string of warm days found us not only snowless but with temperatures in the 50's. People came undone; one day a young man passed me on his bicycle. He was wearing a linen jacket.
January used to mean stiff winds and snow drifts, sliding parties and toddlers in so many layers that you want to poke them to see if they hit the ground and bounce back up. Waiting until February for our first snow was not only unnatural but also unnerving. I'm a tender transplant to Minnesota, having been here only two decades, but I remember when I succumbed to the awful majesty of winter, when the tow truck required to move your car two feet to the garage seemed charming and shoveling was reclassified as aerobic exercise. I was sitting with friends in a six-holer shack on the great lake of Mille Lacs, waiting for the depth-finder to show us some fish. I excused myself to step outside.
I was caught by the night sky, a dark wrap on the horizon, and by the vision of a slumbering village of ice-fishing shacks as far as the eye could see. Occasionally the ice groaned, but you could stamp your feet on that temporary terra firma and feel grounded in the embrace of Old Man Winter. You breathed out and your breath stayed on the air like a small white cloud. I fell in love.
The affair continued. It got serious when I picked up a pair of cross-country skis and found myself moving parallel to the Mississippi River, the open parts of the water looking like polished pewter.
So I'm a woman in love and my suitor, Old Man Winter, is turning fickle, waving at me with a few flurries and then leaving and now showing up again at the last minute. I'd slam the door on him, but . . . maybe he didn't mean it. Maybe he'll stick around this time, at least long enough for a turn by the river.

Maria and I, along with both sets of our parents went to the Home and Garden Show this weekend at the Convention Center in Minneapolis. Maria's brother david had a display for his landscaping company "Pine to Prairie" in the center of the auditorium. He was on the morning shows for several local TV channels this week, and after seeing his beautiful displays I can see why. They built this beautiful little set of an old european garden grotto, with a beautiful waterfall. Here are a couple of pictures of their set:

Liv's MCJROTC team participated in the annual Upper Midwest JROTC Challenge at Cretin-Derham Hall on Friday - and took first place, breaking St. Thomas's 10 year record. St. Thomas didn't even place. When their name was announced, Cretin (an otherwise arch-rival) gave a standing ovation, which was possibly the best part of it all. Not bad for an inner city public school to beat a private military academy. Liv adds that a cadet from Arlington said, "When we go to a competion we look out for the home team and the Marines."

Hi, everybody! My first post. You are all invited to my choir concert at 4 P.M., February 16th, at Fairmount Ave. United Methodist Church, 1523 Fairmount Ave., St. Paul, MN 55105. Hope you can come.
Also, I'm presenting a paper on the film "Japanese War Bride" on March 6th, at the Society for Cinema and Media Studies Conference. I'm editing and cramming as fast as I can. Very nervous about it, but I'll try my best.

After several people voiced concerns I came to the decision that it would be best if we didn't discuss politics on here. I then removed ALL the recent posts that referred to politics. I apologize if anyone was upset by my editing those posts, I didn't think anyone would mind. I thought we could just remove references to those and start fresh. Next time I'll be sure to let everyone know. Just so everyone knows, I won't be editing any future posts. :)
Have a wonderful weekend everyone! (oh and the furry monster is gone, but not before one final present for us in the office.. Good riddance you little devil!)
Thursday, February 06, 2003
It seems like forever since I wrote on here. Lots of news! I just wanted to add about our furry monster at our house. She did have an accident last night except this time it wasnt poo. She seems to be getting worse. I am anxious to take her back tomorrow morning. One more night with crazy dog.
I dont know if you early risers in MN have been watching the morning news, but my brother David was on the news this morning and yesterday morning. I hear he will probably be on Channel 4 tomorrow morning. He's being interviewed regarding his showcase at the Home and Garden Show. He owns his own landscaping company and they have been involved with the show for several years. I am so proud to say that I have a famous brother. For those of you who may watch it tomorrow, his company is called Pine to Prairie. Pete and I may be filling in for my brothers assistant on Sunday, so maybe you guys could come out and see us. Take care everyone!
The other day Hobbyspace.com put up a link to my Columbia artwork. This morning I received this email:
Mr. Anderson,
I was reading about the Shuttle Columbia tragedy on Hobbyspace.com, and found a link to your artwork "Lift". I'm going to print out the poster and put it up at work.
I work at United Space Alliance in Houston. My project is the Cockpit Avionics Upgrade.
http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/shuttle_avionics_020516.html
for more information.
I grew up in MN and graduated from the U of MN in 1992, with a B.S. in physics. After working for 8 years in Wisconsin on commercial avionics software verification, I moved with my family to Houston for the sole reason of being involved with the space program. I saw from some of your links that you might be a U of MN graduate.
Those of us in the NASA family are still mourning our loss. Your poster is inspiring to me, and I think it will be to others as well.
Thanks again for your artwork.

Maria's parents came over last night to see the puppy and have dinner with Maria. I was over at Mom and Dad's house getting my hair cut. I came home and the dog was just running around wildly barking and having fun..
I went into the office before work this morning, and lo and behold! Puppy poop #3. Maybe we should start taking bets as to when and where the next one will be ??

A while back I found out about something called "card modeling," making models using card stock. I used it to make some of the spaceship models you can see at http://spaceship.mrklingon.org . Fun, and a cheap way to make models. The nice part is, if you lose or wreck parts... you can just print new ones on the computer. The designer of the ones I've used even gives things away for free: http://www.spacecraftmodels.com. After this weekend, he put up a free model of the Columbia - I made the model and used it to make this poster, which incorporates a picture taken by the astronauts during Columbia's last mission: Remember Columbia
Hey everybody, had a great whirlwind visit to NYC with Mae. Actually, the whirlwind was blowing off the Hudson River Sunday a.m. Had a great time including visits to the American Museum of Natural History (a great place -- also kind of a shrine to Teddy Roosevelt for some reason, reminded me of RHS), Columbia U and several very crowded restaurants. I could have used my recumbent bike -- especially when stuck in traffic coming in from the Airport. The subways were great -- it will be interesting to read the wallpaper next time I go to Subway. Mae was a great host -- y'all go see her. And Liv, go girl...
Naughty puppy!

Four years ago, Liv and I took part in Space Camp - learning about space exploration, launching rockets and even getting to simulate shuttle missions. It was a terrific experience and one that, for us, made reports of real missions come to life. So the loss of the Columbia and her crew was a stunning event - as Liv wrote on her blog: The unthinkable happened this morning. I cannot believe it. I had a Saturday lab for Biology this morning and most of the class was in shock. It's so sad.
This morning, without having talked about it, both Liv and I decided to wear our Space Camp pins:

With Teresa off in San Antonio, we're doing our best to get by. Tonight Norris prepared us a great meal!

Minute steak with cheese and toast. Oven fries. Salad with
cottage cheese and pineapple. Also shakes and Vanilla (diet) Cokes.
Koko does his best to last through this bleak time - looking suspicously out the back gate
when he is in the back yard ("Where IS she?"), or curled up, trying to sleep the time away
before she returns.

(He'll be happy to see discover he gets a trip to Red Wing on Wednesday!)
