I will keep you all posted on any further developments.

Mom in 1953 Posted by Hello

This is a picture Paul scanned in - this being Mom's birthday month, and just having celebrated Mother's day, it seemed fitting to share it on the blog. Paul notes that Dad wrote on this one Mae and the clouds . . . nice profile . . . 5/31/53.

Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone.. This year my parents gave me some money to spend on what i wanted to get - so what did I get? A Kubb set of course! I even got as ambitious as to paint my kubb set in Swedish colors. Next family outing we'll all have to play!

The Swedish Birthday Song

By popular demand here again is a link to the...
Swedish Birthday Song lyrics and tune!
From Paul:
It is generally referred to as Ja, MÃ¥ Han Leva! (Yes, May He Live!) Although the subject may also be she or they.

A couple of pronunciation tips. Pronounce 'r' in the front of your mouth. (Not the guttural American way.)

Uti (oot-ee) is one word and so is hundrade (hune drah-dee).

Ungame

Tom and Stevie after switching pants.. why? because they had to - the Ungame said so..:)

EDIT: oops.. it was brought to my attention that this picture was NORRIS and Stevie. That's what I get for blogging so late at night. sorry Norris..

Church of Corpus Christi, Easter Vigil 2005
Hope everyone has a happy and blessed Easter!!

Wednesday, March 23, 2005

Hi from D.C.

Greetings from our nation's capital. I'm attending the National Immunization Conference and my mommy and daddy are running around town getting into trouble. They greatly enjoyed visiting the Basilica (largest Catholic church in the U.S.) and the just-opened "Faces of the Fallen" at Arlington Cemetery--a rendering of all the faces of men and women who have died in Iraq (by different artists).

Tomorrow our boss is giving a plenary talk (to the big group of about 1,500) and I'm giving a workshop presentation (to about 50-100 people). Then, off to the airport to race home for the Holy Thursday service!

I'll see most of you on Easter. John and Lynda, I'll see you in Decatur in a week... I think I saw some monkey grass today.

oops! a late invitation

Oops! We are so slow inviting you all to the youth dinner at our church that Joel’s bus driver had to do it!! Don G. drives a university bus and Joel often rides on his bus. We’ve just learned that Don mentioned it before you heard it from us.
Stevie’s youth group (Tom and Beckie are both youth leaders) is having a Mystery
Dinner on Saturday night at 6:00. It is a fundraiser for the summer youth mission trip to New York City. The mystery takes place in the 1930's so you can dress in that fashion for the fun of it, but it’s not required.
The price is $8. per ticket. Call Tom or Nancy to make a reservation by Friday.
We hope y'all can come!

Pod People! On Beyond Blogging!!

The *newest* thing - is Podcasting, kind of like radio blogging! Little sound files that come from amateurs and professional radio sources. They can be music, personal journals, or technical articles. People download them to iPod's or mp3 players and listen to them wherever they choose.

I've been enjoying a number of them - technical interviews, music and such. One I like is by a Dutch priest, Father Roderick Vonhögen, and is called "Catholic Insider." Anyway, I sent him a note last week, and here's what he had to say.

Trip report

Finally, a few pictures from our trip. Here is the Hellerup park outside our hotel before and after a blizzard. It started snowing when we were in Sweden on Saturday, and continued through the night. Usually, I'm the cheap one regarding taxis, but Joel insisted we drag our suitcases through the half mile of snow from the hotel to the train station.

Here we are in Lund, Sweden. Lisa (right) and Carl (left) are Joel, Paul, John, Matt and Mark's third cousins. Marita is their mother. Lisa's boyfriend Erik is taking the picture. They were most gracious and welcoming. We ate two huge meals in one afternoon.

Cold Copenhagen

Sitting at the train station, using up our minutes, even though we discovered a free computer in the "business center" of our hotel (a lobby a few feet from our room, with artwork and one PC). We had a few minutes of sun today, but it's still quite blustery walking. We took the train up north a bit to "Louisiana," the modern art museum that Gustaf took Norris to six years ago. Tomorrow we will hop on the train going south and venture into Sweden to meet the relatives.

Thursday, February 10, 2005

"Know it? Why, I was a boy here!"

Not quite - but a day rambling around Copenhagen made me feel like Scrooge when he said that, since I was here working for 6 weeks 20 years ago. Teresa and I spent yesterday walking around Copenhagen streets. It was weirdly familiar - I couldn't tell you how to find things here, but.... walking around I'd think "there should be a bookstore here..." and there would be! (Or a Burger King, or a church.... whatever - my memory of twenty years was remarkably accurate).''

Today Teresa is at her WHO meeting (we walked around Hellerup last night, locating her meeting place and then eating at a Pizza joint). Lots of bicycle traffic in town and in our more suburban location, even today when it was a bit rainy.

I'm in Copenhagen today, with plans to wander around some more to see the sites - not just sit in the train station on the internet.

And the icing on the cake!

Thanks to everyone who came to the celebration of Matt's 40th Birthday! For those who weren't here and didn't see the cake - we asked Liv's friend Andy's family bakery to come up with something to incorporate "Aliens, Birthday and Sweden" and here's what they did! Matt put together a great slide show, too - a very touching look back! Happy Birthday again, Matt!

Happy 40th Birthday Matt! We'll see everyone tonight..

greetings to the anderson family from the AmericInn in rochester, mn. I am in a tennis tournament down here at the Rochester Athletic Club. I won both of my matches last night(one of them by default) and I will play again today at 2. it is prett boring. I dont really enjoy tennis tournaments too much. but it is good for me, I guess. I have about three and a half hours until my match against harry whitely, so I should probably go read a book or something like that. well I hope that everyone has a good weekend and so on and so forth.

Disney World

Hi:

Joel asked me to post his montage of Disney pictures. We had a good time with Norris, although the weather got cold and rainy in the second half of the week.

Our favorite quote comes from a man on our bus pontificating about the wonders of Disney World to his fellow travelers: "I can't believe people who feel they have to visit Universal Studios when there's so much to do here. I ask them, 'Have you eaten in every restaurant? Have you urinated in every restroom?'"

Cold Day in Minnesota

Cold Day in Minnesota:

Temperatures plummeted across the eastern half of the nation Monday, approaching an all-time record in northern Minnesota and freezing the Gulf Coast as a river of Arctic air pushed southward.

Thermometers registered a low of 54 degrees below zero at Embarrass, Minn.

"You keep living, but it gets old after a while," said Christine Mackai, the town clerk for the community of about 1,400 people in northeast Minnesota.

Minnesota's record is 60 below, set on Feb. 2, 1996, in Tower, about 10 miles north of Embarrass.

somebody gave me a pipe tonight, so I am gonna be able to smoke lots more things now(if you know what I'm sayin). just kidding. but honestly, I think that pipes are pretty cool. they are better than cigarettes because they smell a lot better and you dont inhale and they dont have nicotene and stuff. so its pretty sweet. people like me and cs lewis are really into that kind of thing. well, have a goodnight everyone.

PETE'S UPDATE:

I received a picture of stevie and his new pipe (also wearing his monacle). Here he is..

Adult behavior?

I am shocked, Stevie! Perhaps you are trying all vices in case you get accepted to Bethel and have to take the pledge like Tom. Maybe you should take an entire "wild oats" year like Amish young men.

Our Anderson gift exchange last night just slipped in under the wire. We missed Epiphany, but today was the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, and officially, the last day of the Christmas liturgical season. You will have to celebrate something else when you get your present from Stevie, John.

Here is stevie after taking a drag on the cigarette. Not too good is it? :)

freedom

today, my eighteenth birthday, I bought some cigarettes and smoked them up real good. well, actually I only smoked one and I couldnt finish it cause it was too gross. I just bought them for the sake of buying them, not to smoke. the sad thing was, the guy didnt even card me, so it didnt matter that I was 18. whatever. goodnight.

Joel, you've figured it out... your artists rendition was actually very close to how she actually looks. Here is an actual photo of Nala the Ewok princess. :) (watch out, it IS turning into cute dog blog.)

Dog.... or alien?

IS it possible that Nala is really an undercover Ewok?!?

Congratulations!

Congratulations, Liv! Go Northfield! That's awesome--I wish you the best of a collegiate career at the school across the river. Have a tea at Blue Mondays for me, and don't spend too many nights at the Reub.

When Trees Attack

Janelle was looking at our new giant tree in our living room last night..."I could stare at this tree all night," she said. Seconds later I heard a thundering crash, and the tree had tipped over, spilling ornaments, needles and water all over the floor...the picture above is a dramatic reenactment!

Yumpin' Yiminy - there goes another one!

Those Swedes blast off again!

The scientific rocket Maxus 6 was successfully launched from Esrange today (11/22/2004). Everything proceeded as planned and the scientists are looking forward to some exciting analysis of the data.

The rocket was launched from the Swedish Space Corporation rocket base Esrange at 08.35 UT and reached 706 km which enabled 12 minutes of microgravity.

Swedes Reach the Moon!

Click on the image above to see the lonnnnng, slow route that was taken to get to the moon. Thrifty Swedes, they reached the moon with lots of fuel left over!

SMART-1 is the first of ESA's 'Small Missions for Advanced Research in Technology'. It reached the Moon using revolutionary propulsion techniques and carrying a battery of miniaturised instruments. (click here for ESA web page about SMART-1).

Launched by the ESA last year, this is a Swedish built spacecraft and is only the second ever using an ion-drive as its main rocket.

Mae in NYC

Hi, Andersons,

I saw Mae in NYC last Saturday night. I was there for a conference. Mae, my brother Terrell, his girlfriend Jen, and I all went out to Dragonfly, a Filipino restaurant in Greenwich Village. Then, we went to Cafe Reggio, and then we went to Upright Citizens Brigade, a standup comedy and improv group. Fun show. It was great to see Mae. I had a whirlwind trip, but NY was fun.

Leo Strauss?

I did not send this message, which Joel alerted me to. In fact, I've never seen this material or heard of Leo Strauss. Has someone hijacked my Anderblogger identity?

I did send a blog mentioning seeing Teresa and Janelle's opus "Needle Tips" in the break room at CDC. I did see one person reading it, by the way...

UPDATE: This is Peter, since you didn't write it John, I'll remove the post. I'm not sure how that post got under your username? In any event, the post will be removed. If you want a new password, let me know at onebigswede at hotmail.com

CDC

Thanks for the news, John. Were the "Needle Tips" being used to wipe up spills or something in the break room? At least you didn't find them in the restroom, a la the old Sears Roebuck catalog.

Welcome Andersons

As I was reading John's blog I realized we have something in common. I was just heating a cup of water in the microwave... I wish y'all out-of-staters could come to our 30th anniversary get- together. Just a reminder to Minnesotans...
2-5 p.m. Saturday, October 30th at our church at 31st. St. and 14th Av. Just cake and punch, same as 30 years ago! No gifts.
Mark and I had a great dinner on the 26th at Famous Dave's. It was quite different than I had envisioned it. At least 6 times, different people came to ask us how our meal was. Do we look like someone who works for the Taste section, or what? Nancy

Needle tips in CDC

Hey Anderbloggers,
It's been a while since I posted, but I thought I'd report that while I was heating a cup of water in the microwave in the 4th floor break room I found a pile of a publication called "Needle Tips." On page 2 Janelle is listed as Editorial Assistant and Teresa as "Consultant". Thought you'd like to know that your work has made it over to the dark side...

Its been a wet cold rainy few days here - but the fall colors are nice..
